Mybility all terrain wheelchairs has just spent a few days with BBC Top Gear filming in sunny South Wales. Well O.K it was not really sunny, it was cold windy and damp. But fantastic never the less, beautiful views and ruggedly serene.
Thanks to Nick Dalton the producer for getting things sorted.
I have to admit the whole filming process is an interesting one to watch. It is intense, involves lots of personnel, and is an exercise in chaotic harmony. Well maybe less of the harmony, but definitely a well oiled labour intensive Hydra.
I have to thank Nick Dalton for the invite to come and play. The Top Gear teams’s idea seemed simple, build their own offroad wheelchairs or scooters and pit them against 3 models available on the market for some offroad antics. 3 army Vets were asked to try the chairs then everyone was pointed towards the top of the hill.

In a wheelchair a great deal of proficiency is required, think of it as giving someone a bicycle for the first time and after an hour telling them to ride down a mountain side. I have to admit given this, the lads adapted and excelled, in very difficult terrain.
The Mybility chair is a little more difficult to excel in than simply point and shoot, having said that it is relatively forgiving, but only relatively.

On the first day we found ourselves being driven around up some of the slopes in Range Rovers, and I being a novice 4×4 car passenger I thought this thing won’t get up here, but that was just my mistake as it tackled the slopes fairly easily. I made a mental note to pay more attention while watching Top Gear! The lack of grip, with road tyres did defeat the Land Rovers, I was sort of pleased, as the Sliding hopelessly sideways was disconcerting. It was probably not being in control that bothered me more. Both vehicles turned back, it was getting dark by this time. I just realised that this would be a difficult test for the Mybility chair and a novice user, sometimes you just have to have faith.

I found myself getting really bored the day of the filming, just hanging around half way up on the slopes. It seemed to be a much better idea to start my own assent, I have a tediously low boredom threshold and started along the heavily sodden ground. Unusually for Wales it had rained all night, but that’s life. My mind melding experiments with the sheep had not been worth while, perhaps the sheep in Wales are just as bored as I was.

During my meandering I came across a backup ‘rescue’ 4×4 buried up to its axles in a clay bog area, heavily rutted after some very heavy vehicle traffic. I looked but I could see no sign of the tanks responsible. This area was very difficult to traverse, my dinky wheelchair spans 70cm, the ruts were around 25cm deep and there was no easy way to cross.
I finally had to tac my way down and along a very steep double cambered slope. This was no easy proposition, but luckily Andrew the rescue vehicle driver stood at my side and leaned into the chair.
I decided to kick myself, but couldn’t so got Andrew to kick my chair, l realised that I’d been using the wrong chair program. Mine is usually set up for quick burst of power rather than long drags of constant hill climbing. I noticed this the day before, but it did not sink into my vacant brain. Going back down to get my computer, was too much of a pain so I meandered my way along with plenty of rest periods. Andrew got back to his task of winching himself out.

After around 10 mins I was clear of the worst of the terrain. At this time I decided that I would have to attach a winch to my chair with a grappler that could be launched by crossbow to extricate myself from future events.
It’s on my long list of doohickeys to build.

While I was gathering my thought, (yes just the one) I saw the most wonderful contraption. I think it was an ATV can’t remember the brand name. It powered over, up and down the tank ruts, while gliding and slipping across the surface of the doubled cambered slope. The driver seemed to have it in a constant gliding wheel spin. I was in awe, I definitely want one of those although I would have to bolt myself down to it, as I’ve no lower strength or balance. I would just be plopped out. I confirmed this when I flagged the driver down and asked him to take me for a spin. Tremendous fun though. It was then I wondered if there was any law against having astrology powered wheelchair and using it at Tesco’s?

I spent the rest of the time wondering around, and designing, in my head, a new style off road wheelchair based on my frame, for some serious off road wheelchair action. It’s amazing what I can think up while I’m bored. It’s going to be built in the next 6 months, but it’s already working in my head. But that is no guarantee.

The piece is being aired some time in Feb, I can’t wait to see what it comes out like. I saw a little of the presenters during the filming. Jeremy Clarkson was kicking his chair, James May wasn’t doing much in his chair, and Richard Hammond was just plain cheating in his ‘wheelchair’.

All Terrain Wheelchairs by Mybility at Catastrophic Injuries Seminar. The All Terrain wheelchair by Mybility was very well received at a recent seminar about the technological advancements in equipment for catastrophic spinal cord injury patients. Hosted by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, the event was attended by a cross sector of specialist lawyers.

Mybility director, Chris Christou led a session where he talked about the recent advancements in wheelchair technology, which has meant that the latest generation of wheelchairs can go a long way towards restoring the independence and former lifestyle of spinal injury patients.

More specifically, these technological advancements mean that spinal injury patients can now comfortably and safely tackle terrains that traditional wheelchairs would not be able to manage.

Standing Model All Terrain Wheelchair
Chris, a wheelchair user himself, personally demonstrated and showed videos of the wheelchair successfully handling some very challenging terrains, from steps, cobbles, grass, mud, countryside and even snow.

Furthermore the standing model all terrain wheelchair in the Mybility range means that users can tilt and get into an upright position. The effect of this is that they can enjoy unprecedented levels of freedom of movement and simply “get on with their day” whether at home, at work or at play in the city or in the countryside.

In addition the standing function can be used as part of a therapeutic physical therapy regime, especially where a standing programme is recommended for rehabilitation and ongoing well-being. As a result of these features the benefits of the new generation of All Terrain wheelchairs for spinal injury suffers is clear to see.

Compensation Advice
Every year, about 2000 people in the UK suffer traumatic spinal cord injury leading to permanent paralysis. Specialist lawyers are very well placed to provide advice to ensure that suffers receive vital compensation, information and support, particularly in those early days. Consulting a specialist expert can be key to getting the right advice and information.

The seminar was attended by highly respected catastrophic injury lawyers including national coordinator for APIL’s Spinal Cord Injury Special Interest Group Warren Collins and group secretary David Tomlinson In addition Andrew Dalton Who specializes in catastrophic motorcycle accident injuries was also in attendance.

I have come to appreciate my all terrain wheelchair more and more. The longer I spend in it the more my life improves, well it’s not that it just improves I find that I want to do more and more. That’s what I call the cascade effect, having such a capable chair allows me to engage in the real world as I please.

Initially, just like most people I needed / wanted my all terrain chair for a specific purpose. Being outside. So I could continue running my gardening business, accessing all types of difficult terrain and carry on the work which I love.

It is only after I had been in the chair for a year or so I began to use it more as an everyday chair, this crept up on me, until I used the chair for everything and I now hate being out of it. It completes me.

I speak to a lot of people who want one of my chairs just to get outside in the real world, you know walk in the woods, on the beach, and yes it’s a good reason to want an all terrain chair. But it’s not really a good enough reason in the long term. The outside invariably involves getting inside at some point. I can’t imagine only going out for a woodland walk, that’s not enough.

I go for a woodland walk with friends, go to a pub for lunch, pop to the shops, then back to my friends house to relax and perhaps another drink. This is what an all terrain chair should be used for. Real life. Real life is rounded and unexpected, my chair allows me to match what ever happens. I enjoy the unexpected, it’s not a problem, not even an issue, it engages me.

I meet many people that are trapped in their traditional electric chairs. I also have to mention that the design of these have really not changed for 40 years, what’s that about? Very pretty shopping trolleys?

Come to think about it that’s why I meet so many people who tell me that they have destroyed part of their chairs or snapped the frame or some such. They are simply not designed to engage with the real world. Of course us wheelchair users have no need of a life, we are just happy to sit in a chair, let’s just give thanks and roll around on a nice flat sterile surface. Perhaps we could be medicated just in case we had thoughts of engaging in the real world.

Do traditional chairs come with a free life supply of pacifying medication? Is that why so many are sold? The users forced to take mind altering drugs?

Although in the past I have taken mind altering drugs, ( don’t worry I didn’t inhale ), not enough to make me own a shopping trolley. I want, no I demand a life. Am I arrogant in my views, Hell Yes. I realise that fundamentally I am enjoying my life, don’t get me wrong things are not happy clappy. But I think what I am trying to to say is that my Four X has enabled me, I’ve just got a regular life nothing special, maybe that’s what’s good about it.

Yes I’m broke, in debt, don’t earn enough, I love my gardening work, and I also enjoy meeting new people and talking chairs, I like the fact I can go for a walk in woodland, or go to the pub or just lay out in the sun, or go down a mountain side, or go to the cinema, or well you get the point. I’m FREE.

If I can help others have that freedom in one of my chairs, rather than a shopping trolley, have a list of things they would like to try rather than having a list of things they can’t do, then that makes me happy.

Oh yea while I’m meandering along this line, I hear so much about, this and that should me made accessible, there should be ramps and smooth surfaces for wheelchair friendliness, the bloody wheelchair pound! If it’s not accessible they they won’t get my money (I’m performing a social service). What I load of bollocks. The world should be enabled by design, If it’s wide enough for kiddies double buggie and if it’s got a couple of small steps then it’s good enough for an all terrain wheelchair. Design things in a way that they can be used for most people, elegant is always good.

I will be dead and burried a thousand times over before the world is made wheelchair friendly. Instead of spending trillions in adapting the world spend much much less and provide people with all terrain wheelchairs that will enable us to engage with the real world, not shopping trolleys that trap us and limit our outlook.

My life feels good and I can only put it down to my wheelchair, and everything it has enabled me to do, but more importantly it has given me the hunger to do more. More of what, I don’t really know but perhaps that is the point.

Another year has flashed by, (it will be NEXT Christmas soon!), and I’m in contemplative mood, or am I justifying my existence? Either way I’m sitting in my all terrain four X wheelchair on my well worn soapbox rambling on about how I have come to be in this happy place. Happy, I never thought I would use that word about myself, but I have been transformed, a robot in disguise, forgive my homage to the kids cartoon.
There are many ingredients to my new found lust for life; my Four X All Terrain Wheelchair, new MS medication, a car that I can drive, my flat being made wheelchair accessible (very soon), access to work, and my Four X All Terrain Wheelchair. So good I named it twice.

I have had MS for a tediously long time, during which I have died a little bit at a time, so I have always have had to adapt. ‘Adapt’ was a necessary life mantra, I guess it was adapt or nihilism. I’ve played nihilism before it’s just no fun, well there’s no fun in MS.

By the time I had felt that it was all over, it had been all over a hundred fold, that’s hard to reconcile, even if one on has weaponised one’s delusionary hope.
Fortunately with my last throws of the dice I had applied to Access to Work. I needed desperately to be able to get out of the house and get to work properly, rather than being a sack of potatoes. At this stage having a life was not even in the equation, my nihilism had been on gas mark 7 for an eternity and was ready to be served with all the trimmings.

Everything started with the Four X, it was my only means of transport, well it was my everything. The ability to get to work, (yea, sad I know, GET TO WORK – more like get a life), yes back to work. Continuing to design, build and maintain gardens had been the only thing keeping me hanging on admittedly by the fingertips. The choice in chair had been solely to indulge me in this. I trained myself to use the chair wth my left hand, solely so I could keep working efficiently, from pruning to using a nail gun, while being able to easily adjust my position. It was a bugger training myself to control the chair left handed, but it has been so worth the blue language. The long term nett benefits far outweigh the initial difficulty. I can even open doors easily, imagine that!

I see so many people more trapped in their wheelchairs than they need to be, not just by having a rubbish wheelchair instead of a life, just by the way in which they control their chairs

I attend a number of mobility exhibitions and usually stay at Premier Inns. One evening I was walking down the corridor to my room, as I turned the corner I encountered another wheelchair user coming at me with his wife in tow. My first thought was ‘High Noon’, after this little head trip I reversed back down the corridor, just past the 90 degree turn to the exist. With my Pistols safely holstered and wearing a smile I watched the two trundle down towards me. The two had a dead eye look, instinctively I stroked the handles and rested my thumb on the hammer. Looking through squinted eyes, (a piece of fluff), the two came to the exit point. The chair did not slow down, I screamed ‘slow down’, in my head. Nothing. Slow Down. Nothing. The chair kept coming. Then something quite unexpected happened. In fact I sat there with my mouth wide open. The chair came past the point of no return then stopped dead, a road block?. The chairs’ wife leaned over him, dead eyes staring, my thumb now caressing the hammer. The wife was trying to reach over and open the door, she silently communcated with the chair to ease forward for a better reach. With the wife now leaning over the chair at full stretch on one leg the chair reversed back, swivelled played bumper cars and made it through the door. The wife followed.

My point? During this well rehearsed routine the two never spoke. The chair never made an attempt to open the door. It was decided long ago that this was beyond the chairs capabilities. The wife had to be present for the chair to exist. I began to understand the dead eye look. My point? Exist for yourself. Adapt. Live. Lust. Achieve. Enjoy, Be happy? Try.

I have experienced a cascade effect in my life. To tell you the truth it has crept up on me not just with my infinitely increased mobility but in the way in with which I engage with people, and now my attitude to life. I am a captive set free. Which I find wonderful, or more correctly I have finally accepted that it is wonderful.

The Four X wheelchair was my life line, and was my only form of transport for a year. I was a whippet coursing. I used it as a car in all weathers and would make an 11 mile round trip journey once a week for a breakfast networking meeting. This I did in all weathers, the worst and probably my favourite was at the beginning of this year in the very heavy snow, when everything ground to a halt. For a bit of snow! OK a lot of snow. My all terrain wheelchair was the safest thing on the roads or pavements. Cars were abandoned ( as I passed them with a secret smile) and walkers were hospitalised with broken bones, the Four X wheelchair just went on with ease. The only difficulty was that the snow fell so heavily that it kept settling on my glasses on my return trip and I was snow blind for long periods. As you can imagine the trip was more difficult as I could hardly see obstacles, and ran over stumps and dropped off curbs at full pelt. Luckily the chair is very forgiving even with an idiot user in control.

During this year I became more sociable by accident. As I walked down the road I would encounter people, (imagine that real people), they would obviously stare from a mile away, my chair was a visual magnet, they kept staring. By the time that we were 6 foot away and, because we are british and very polite you know, the only thing left for the walkers to do was to say hello, and sometimes even break into a smile! Imagine saying hello to a total stranger, and sometimes having conversations. Walkers don’t do this on the high street, tubes or buses. Strange really, but I used play in this game.

By being able to go anywhere in my all terrain chair, people talk to me, this has become a habit now. It’s scratched into my being, odd, a very simple thing casual human interaction, people want to talk and smile.
I have a theory. I am engineering society by walking down the road in my chair, generating human interaction and making my immediate world a better happier place. If lots of wheelchair users flooded the outside world everyone would be saying hello and conversing with each other. There will have to be a critical mass of chairs acting as visual magnets to change the world. Well thats grumpy people sorted.

I have included a video of myself walking to my local pub in the snow. There is something wonderful about going and playing about in snow. I look forward to the next snow fall.
I have droned on enough for now, Have a great new year.

I have joined the Disabled Ramblers as I love the outdoor life. I have Multiple Sclerosis and miss being able to take long walks especially through woods. I have found this impossible due to my high levels of fatigue and general exhaustion. Well until I purchased my Four X all terrain wheelchair which has revolutionised my life. It has reduced my mobility in a good way. Before (when I was able) I used to walk around using a stick then after many relapses crutches. I forced myself to do this, but all that happened was that I felt that I had run 4 marathons back to back everyday. As you can imagine after years of doing this there was nothing left of me, add in lots of stress from not being able to get around at work and 4 relapses back to back I felt that I was finished. Well I was, being constructively confined indoors for many months was, to say the least, depressing.

My life changed for the better after getting my Four X All Terrain Wheelchair. I was no longer exhausted, I could get around. I am not talking about getting around on flat surfaces like many so called outdoor chairs. I could “Go Where I Want”. I have constantly pushed the boundaries of my chair, and have found the freedom it gives me fantastic.

To this end I have joined the Disabled Ramblers, just another expression of my freedom I suppose. I can’t wait. I do hope that I will come across some very challenging terrain so that I can push myself. (I think that I must be mentally irregular ). I am somewhat disappointed that, from what I can see, most of this club use heavy duty scooters and not wheelchairs. Maybe the have never owned a Four X all terrain wheelchair.

I think I secretly want to find a mountain side or something so I can tackle it in my wheelchair. Many years ago I was briefly a member of the Dangerous Sports Club – so I must be some sort of stupid stuff junkie. (that is another very blurred Stolli fuelled story). I love the fact that my chair makes me think about doing these sorts of things again- I think that I am alive!

Any way I am meandering again.

Sometimes getting to work in a wheelchair can be a challenge. Luckily my Four X Wheelchair enables me to set my own goals and Go Where I Want. I am more mobile and happier than I have been in years, don’t compromise with your wheelchair.

In fact I sometimes think that zipping around in my four X wheelchair is the best temporary relief from my M.S. It is a shame that it was not prescribed by my neurologist, life would have been much more enjoyable a long time ago. I must remind myself to get it serviced (sorry just thinking allowed).

Hi I’m Chris, and I run Mybility Ltd. I use a Four X DL Stand up model, I also have M.S (15 happy go lucky years plus). Around 2 years ago I started to look around for a Four X outdoor wheelchair. My passion is gardening. I design, build and maintain gardens. I stumbled into gardening a long time ago and found that it pushed my buttons, which was a great surprise to me, and decided to make it my living. After all this time I still enjoy it, but have had to adapt my approach due to my developing M.S.

Over a 12 month period I had 4 relapses which nearly destroyed my resolve. I suppose I was wallowing in self pity or something like that. I found myself in the position that I could no longer just ‘adapt’ my way out of my growing M.S issues and continue to do what I loved in any meaningful way. That is why I started looking for all terrain outdoor wheelchairs.

It took around 3 months of research and a few trials until I discovered the Four X range. This is by far the best all round all terrain wheelchair available, and I love it. The Four X outdoor wheelchair has changed and invigorated my life in more ways than I have time to bore you with. Well perhaps another time.

I am afraid that I am like most users of all terrain / outdoor wheelchairs that I have met in that I totally abuse my chair and make it take me down mountains (well very steep hilly woodland), cross country, over really steep obstacles. Well the point of this is that we all abuse our chairs and make them do things to empower us in some way, but we do not take care of them. All the cars I have owned have been serviced on a regular basis, when new under the manufacturers warranty instructions, even after they are still serviced once a year. Why do we treat our chairs differently, when one’s chair is the most vital thing for our mobility, adventure, stimulation, everyday getting around and a host of other stuff that is vital to our psyche and interaction with the world. Damn I’m getting far too serious.

The point is that nearly all of the chairs I have encountered for service have either, not had a real service (to my standard), or never been serviced in years. What is wrong with everyone, we have invested in our lives with our chairs, then we ignore and abuse them . If my chair got to the point that it was out of action needing serious repair for any length of time I would be a misery to live with AND seriously miserable.

Mybility services the Four X outdoor wheelchairs with this in mind. Get your chair serviced and keep using it for 10 years.

When Mybility undertakes a service the chair is fully stripped down, all electric and computers are check as well as analysing the programs. This is done because I cannot live without mine and I don’t expect any one else to have a run down neglected chair. In fact if you are a regular client Mybility may even lend you one. Or you can hire one short term, in fact you can hire one for your holidays if your chair is not up to hill climbing, beaches or any other stuff people take for granted on holiday.

I would welcome any comments, (well not any, but you know what I mean).

chris x

I researched for around 5 months, probably more, to find the best wheelchair options.

I have had a few treatments with Jacqui Taylor of Outstanding Lives International. As usual I seem to have started backward. Hi, I’m Chris I have had Multiple Sclerosis for around 15 years now, probably more, well you know how time flies. To tell you the truth it has become very tedious now. I had 4 attacks last year which has left me relying on a wheelchair, obviously it is a Four X, a DL stand up model. It is a relief to be more mobile in the chair, and I don’t feel like I have run 3 marathons a day trying to get about to do the simplest of tasks.

Sorry I was beginning to ramble, back to Outstanding Lives International. I have heard Jacqui speak about her business on a number of occasions at a networking group we belong to (BNI). I finally decided to ask for a treatment as I felt blocked up and was having headaches, and I had heard from others that her treatments had helped.

Jacqui gave me a full assesment and decided what treatments would benefit me, she is very passionate and knowledgeable, and this shines through as she talks. I should also add that she is a bundle of vitality – this, as far as I am concerned is a great asset for someone in the health field. I underwent 2 treatments a Viral Oil Treatment along the spine and Kinesiology. I cannot begin to tell you how they work or exactly what they are, life is too short sometimes for the exact ins and outs.

After the treatment I felt revitalised and relatively energetic, got in my chair and trundled home (around 6 miles, time flies when I in my Four X), I thought nothing more of the treatment, but was just happy to feel revitalised as this never happens with my extreme fatigue and lassitude levels I experience with my M.S .

It slowly dawned on me during the following week that the constant pain that I feel in my feet and ankles was reduced by 25%, which I thought was very impressive as I have been living with this ‘everyday pain’ for a very long time now. I had already booked a second treatment, and after this it again gradually dawned on me that I was virtually pain free, which I thought remarkable.

While talking with Jacqui, I discovered the depth of her knowledge in many disciplines, as well as the passion and vitality she exudes. Have a look at her website. I will be booking regular treatments with her and it will be her decision as to which ones would be best suited for me, this is the level of faith I have in her treatment abilities.

We will be at the South West Disability Show in Exeter on Friday 17th & Saturday 18th of July 2009. If you would like a try on the best all round all terrain wheelchair see us ( Chris or Justine ) at stand 132. I’m Chris and I run Mybility you can’t miss me I’ll be in my stand up Four X chair.

As a side note I would like some feedback for anyone who would be interested in joining in an all terrain wheelchair paint ball event. If you have any thoughts on this please get in touch. I have been looking for some fun, idiot things to do and paint balling sounds good to me. But if anyone has any other ideas I’m always open to suggestion. I just thought that I would mention my 2 tag lines – Go Where i Want & Set Your Own Goals – because this is how my chair makes me feel.

See you at the show, chris x

Hi I’m Chris and I run Mybility. We have started servicing some of the Four X all terrain wheelchairs, and I have to say that most of the one’s I’ve seen have been in a poor condition. In fact I’m amazed that they have been serviced at all. Well it is definitely not what I would class as a service, perhaps at best a quick spray and a hefty bill is the impression I’m getting. ( sorry I think I’m having a rant! ) Perhaps because I use a Four X myself, a stand up model, I know how important the machine is to me, I’m lost without it. I can’t deal with the idea that it is not looked after and in best of health. This is why when mybility services an all terrain wheelchair it is a total strip down service, it is dismantled, cleaned out, greased, all serviceable parts are inspected and checked, the programming is analysed and the whole machine is brought up to the best possible condition. I have to add all this is carried out without hammering the owner financially. It is what I would expect to be carried out with my chair.

Get in touch if you would like your chair to be given a full strip down service and health check.
